Update on Dean Search

Published on Wed 01/19/22
Dear faculty and staff in the College of Dentistry,

I am pleased with the progress that has been made in the College of Dentistry on many fronts in the last few months. I appreciate the work that all of you have put into navigating a complex situation. In light of the positive reports I have received from various sources, the time seems to me to be right to begin the search for a new Dean of Dentistry, particularly since the search process may take some time. I have asked Dr. Amy Waer, Dean of the College of Medicine, to chair the search, which will be assisted by a professional search firm. The search committee will be constituted according to SAP 12.99.99.MO.02 (Faculty Participation in the Selection, Evaluation, and Retention of Deans), and the Acting Dean of Faculties will be following up with further details on the process.

As the search process unfolds, Dr. José Luis Bermúdez will remain as Acting Dean of Dentistry. With my full support, he will continue to work with his leadership team to institute a new budget process; coordinate plans for the renovation of the Main Building at 3302 Gaston Avenue; address staffing and other challenges in the DDS program; and implement the recommendations of the compliance review team.

I look forward to a successful outcome to this important search, and I am confident that the new dean will find a positive environment in the College of Dentistry.

Sincerely,

Timothy P. Scott ’89
