Dear Texas A&M Community,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. José Luis Bermúdez as interim dean of the Texas A&M University College of Arts and Sciences. He will assume the duties of this position May 1.
Dr. Bermúdez is Professor of Philosophy and the Samuel Rhea Gammon Professor of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University. He has been serving as acting dean of the College of Dentistry since Nov. 1, and will continue to do so until a replacement can be found.
Dr Bermúdez is a distinguished scholar and committed educator who brings significant experience leading organizations and programs during periods of change. Formerly the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, he worked with department heads and faculty in the college to fund and recruit more than 75 new faculty members from leading research universities. While serving as Associate Provost for Strategic Planning, he chaired the committee implementing a comprehensive administrative review of Texas A&M University, which redirected significant annual funding to the teaching and research enterprises.
Dr. Bermudez earned his bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in philosophy from Cambridge University (King’s College). He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Cambridge University (King’s College) in 1992.
Dr. Bermúdez is committed to excellence in our teaching, research, and service missions, while leading the administrative operations for the new College of Arts and Sciences.
